Even though I didn't love the first LOTR I still found this to be a huge disappointment. The acting, writing and special effects in the first two hours two are almost intolerable. The last hour I found to be very similar to Fellowship of the Ring, slow but still executed very well. The main thing to praise about this movie is Gollum, the most engaging computer generated I believe to be ever created. He is engaging and you really believe that this creature really exists. The story follows the "fellowship" after they separated at the end of the last film. There are now three main story lines, each getting about the same airtime. We find Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), Gollum, and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) trying to get to Mordor to destroy "the" ring. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) are trying to get somewhere to stop something. There is another plot line about the other two hobbits being carried by a tree creature to make sure they are not orcs. The whole movie is just a mess until the two-hour mark when an amazing battle happens between the human and elf army and some creature from the wizard Saruman's second tower. The movie barley uses the most valuable assets Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Christopher Lee (Saruman) and I was even more overwhelmed by the whole Middle Earth thing. This movie is not even as close to as good most people and critics are saying, just don't bother.
