What a waste. Underworld is a total waste of talent, money and time on both the studios side and ours. It follows the story of a coven of vampires who are at war with werewolves and thats all we get before the first gunfight. Underworld tries to be Blade meets Romeo and Juliet and its not even close to being as good as Blade. Its all showy effects and costumes, and because of this we could care less about these people. What is even sadder is that due to the fact that the whole movie is so poorly lit, the effects are wasted.
The story of the film follows a vampire named Selene (Kate Beckinsale) who has discovered that the werewolves are following a human (Scott Speedman) and she decides that she needs to find out what they want even against orders. What the werewolves want with him is so ridiculous that its almost embarrassing. They do this because they think that they will stop this millennium long war but when you think about it, it makes no sense. The movie is just so stupid and showy that towards the end I almost got used to it and my dislike lessened a little bit, but it is still a large piece of excrement.
The gunfights are somewhat entertaining but the effects are not up to par and it makes this movie sort of a joke. In fact, it is a joke, if you want to kill two hours and turn your brain off, this is a funny ass movie. Otherwise, just skip it. If you would like to see an entertaining, intelligent violence-filled movie then go see Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
The movie is just unoriginal in all aspects. The effects, story and music are bits taken from other movies. The music gets on my nerves because its almost a direct rip-off of Don Davis score to The Matrix. It is common to emulate The Matrix these days, but this is just lazy.
To show that this movie needs none of your respect, take the cast and crew; not one could be called talented. Its true that novices and nobodies have made many great movies, but an action filled good vampire movie should have attracted a better pedigree of filmmaker. The only person who should have a career after this is Beckinsale; its quite obvious that she did this for her husband, Len Wiseman who directed this trifle. After this movie opened to the number 1 slot, Screen Gems (the studio that released it) green-lit a sequel and a prequel. Please God, no! Someone stop this. I have never seen a great werewolf or vampire movie. The Blade series is pretty entertaining but otherwise there isnt really anything to mention. Just dont see this.
