Scary Movie 3 is by far the biggest disappointment of the year. It is of course the sequel to Scary Movie (2000) and Scary Movie 2 (2001) and is the worst entry so far in the series.
Scary Movie is one of the funniest movies ever made and in the top five best spoofs. It was raunchy, crude and just plain offensive. It spoofed the craze of horror-slasher films of the late nineties after Scream. It is a must-see for anybody who loves to laugh.
One year almost to the day came Scary Movie 2, a movie that mainly spoofed The Haunting (1999), which almost no one saw or liked. It was also obviously rushed, with less than a year, it is impossible to make a skilled funny spoof. Scary Movie 2 tried to use the same gross-out humor of the first but missed the bar of the original. Now comes another sequel that almost ruins the good name of the original. It is also is obviously rushed because the movies it decides to spoof are about a year old and havent had tine to set in or have an effect on our culture like Scream did.
Scary Movie 3 mainly spoofs three movies: Signs, The Ring and 8 Mile--one of the scariest movies of last year. Wait a second, 8 Mile was a serious drama about a white rapper who felt dragged down by his surroundings and showcased Eminems acting ability. So why is this a target of this movie when it need no lampooning? The writers obviously lack imagination. Signs and The Ring are great scary movies, like Scream, that can always receive a little poke.
The heroine from the first two returns, Cindy Campbell (a mix of Neve Campbell and her character from Scream, Sidney Prescott) but this time in Naomi Watts role from The Ring. As we first see Cindy, she reports crop circles in the Washington, D.C. area farmer Tom Logans corn crops. The crops say attack here, hahahahahahaha, wait, thats not funny. She also learns of a tape that, like in The Ring, kills you in seven days of watching it. After bumping into her old friend Brenda (Regina Hall) while picking her nephew up from school, she bumps into George Logan (Simon Rex), the brother of Tom (Charlie Sheen). He invites her to one of his rap battles that are hosted by Mahalik (Anthony Anderson), which the scene is really not funny. The rest is a mix of scenes from The Ring, Signs, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and even Airplane!
The original and the first sequel were directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, but this time around, the reigns are handed over to the great David Zucker. Zucker is responsible for the Naked Gun series, Top Secret, BASEketball and the original spoof, Airplane! Airplane! is by far the best spoof ever made because it generally made fun of the Airport movies which truly needed a good punch in the stomach. He now brings one of the least funny movies in years. There is only one good laugh in the movie, yes only one. It is in the first two minutes, which spoof the first part of The Ring but with Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy. If forced to see this, just as a warning, there are NO laughs after Scary Movie 3 comes up on the screen.
Not even Leslie Nielsen as President Harris can bring a laugh to this. Even when he does the classic We are all counting on you, good luck shtick from Airplane!, there is no laugh. The movie seems to also take scenes from other spoofs most notably other Zucker movies such as Airplane! and BASEketball. The whole movie wastes it amazing cast, just look at the cast listing above. All of them give forced performances that bring the movie down.
The whole movie is just taking scenes from the movies they are spoofing and only adding a funny line here or slapstick comedy there, nothing sets this apart from any other spoof.. This is true on the whole for spoofs but it is only part of what makes the movies memorable. Maybe spoofs cant be made in todays time, maybe the time for them has come and gone, maybe talented people would rather do something else.
DO NOT see this movie, just go to the video store and rent the original or go see The School of Rock for a good comedy currently at the theater.
Grade: F
P.S. I would like to tell you a story that made me laugh. There were very few early reviews for Scary Movie 3, when a couple finally showed up on Aint It Cool News I was eager to read them. In the second review I read the idiot who wrote it thought that the movie had a cameo from Signs director M. Night Shyamalan reprising his role from Signs and that this brought no laughs. Night didnt have a cameo and it was obviously not he but Ajay Naidu from Office Space. This is guy is an ignorant racist who really pisses me off and his name is Pyul Mactackle. To all people writing reviews, if you havent seen a movie or learned most of the facts about it, then do not write. I make mistakes myself but I check it against other sources before I post.
